Let’s talk about comps, baby.

Agents love ‘em.

Writers hate ‘em.

When writing a query or pitch, in the same paragraph that you mention word count and genre, you should mention two “comps” – i.e. comparable works.

Sounds easy, right? But you can’t just say “Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” Both examples should be books (even if that book was later made into a movie or series) and 1 should be current – as in published in the last 18 months.

But my work is unique! you say? Dig deep. Best advice is to walk into a library or a bookstore (preferably an indie) and ask the nice person behind the counter… hey, I’m looking for a book about… and see what they suggest.
