Baileycakes the puggle

It’s summer. Too hot to cook. Shoot, it’s almost too hot to eat. As much as my dog loves chomping down on ice cubes, my vet told me that’s not good for her teeth, so how to cool off and enjoy a tasty treat at the same time?

Ice Krispies!

(New to this blog? Also check out GOING TO THE DOG COOKIES Part One and Part Two for easy (and easier) homemade dog treats.)

Ice Krispies are EASY, QUICK, 2 INGREDIENT, and best of all, NO BAKING REQUIRED! They make a great frozen treat for your pupper(s) on hot summer days and they are so simple, even a kid could make them.

This recipe is courtesy of Baileycakes’ lovely Aunt Jennifer.

You’ll need:

  • 2 1/2 cups of Rice Krispies cereal (unflavored)
  • 1 jar of baby food
  • a bowl
  • a spoon
  • ice cube trays (preferably silicone mold trays)
  • a freezer
  • a good dog who deserves yummy treats

A note on the baby food: This recipe works with any flavor. Just be sure to select a jar of baby food that does not include any ingredients that are hazardous to dogs, and preferably without any artificial colors, sweeteners, or unnecessary preservatives. I’ve had great luck with: pear & carrot & pea, apple & blueberry, banana & blueberry, and sweet potato – but Bailey isn’t a picky eater. Obviously choose a flavor your doggo will like.

Making Dog Treats
Easy to make frozen dog treats

Instructions:

  • Mix 2 1/2 cups of Rice Krispies with 1 jar of baby food.
  • Pack into (ungreased) ice cube tray or silicone mold. I have a small puggle with a big stomach and packed large square ice cube trays about 1/3 full to make 12 treats. Next time, I’m going to make 6 larger treats and use the other mold for a second flavor.
  • Freeze for at least 2 hours.
  • Serve as treat to a very happy dog!

Note: These are chewy and, if Baileycakes is to be believed, delicious.
